This is one of the highlight of the Journey Around the World with the Kobe Steak experience
The term "geisha" comes from the words "gei", meaning art, and "sha", or person. They train rigorously, learning how to play instruments such as the three-stringed shamisen, flute or drums, as well as traditional dance and other skills. Considered "living flowers" their presence adds grace and energy to parties, acting as the perfect hostesses to their patrons and guests. Their services do not come cheap, and they will only entertain upon personal recommendation. Having a geisha at your party is a definite status symbol in Japan. A very closed, traditional society, it is only recently that geisha and maiko have begun performing and meeting with non-introduced visitors, and getting to speak with them is a real treat. (Make no mistake, these talented performers sell their skills, but not themselves. Do not insinuate this, unless you wish to be sharply rebuked.)
